First, define the problem
Three very different faults get described with the same word. Work out which one you have before changing anything:
- One channel stutters, everything else is fine. That’s a single source. Nothing you do at home will fix it — report the channel name.
- Everything stutters, all the time. Local network, device, or a badly configured player.
- Everything is perfect until about 7pm, then falls apart. Congestion — either your ISP’s or your provider’s.
Fix 1 — Get off 2.4GHz Wi-Fi
This is the single biggest win and almost nobody does it. The 2.4GHz band is shared with every neighbour’s router, microwave, baby monitor and Bluetooth speaker. At 8pm in a block of flats it can be effectively unusable, regardless of the speed on your bill.
Connect your TV or stick to the 5GHz network (usually a separate SSID ending in “-5G”), or better, run an Ethernet cable. A £10 Ethernet adapter for a Firestick has ended more buffering complaints than any server upgrade we’ve ever done.
Fix 2 — Run a real speed test on the device itself
Not on your phone standing next to the router — on the device that’s buffering, in the room it lives in. Install a speed test app, or note the bitrate your player reports. You want a stable 25 Mbps or more for 4K, 10 Mbps for HD. If the device sees 6 Mbps while your phone in the hall sees 200, you’ve found the problem and it’s a Wi-Fi coverage issue.
Fix 3 — Change the decoder in your player
Hardware, Hardware+ and Software decoding behave very differently depending on the chipset. Symptoms and the usual cure:
- 4K stutters, HD fine → try Hardware+
- Sound plays, screen black → try Software
- Everything slightly jerky → try Hardware if you’d previously set Software
Fix 4 — Raise the buffer size
Players default to a tiny buffer so channels open fast. On a network with any jitter, that’s exactly the wrong trade-off. Push the buffer to 3–5 seconds. Channel changes get a touch slower and the micro-stutter disappears.
Fix 5 — Restart the device, and mean it
Not standby — a full power cycle, unplugged for ten seconds. Streaming devices leak memory, and a Firestick that’s been “on” for two months will drop frames on content it handled fine in week one. Do it weekly and clear the player’s cache monthly.
A quick diagnostic: play the same channel on your phone over mobile data. If it’s perfect on 4G and stutters on the TV, the stream is fine and the problem is inside your house.
Fix 6 — Rule out ISP throttling
Some ISPs shape streaming traffic at peak hours. The tell-tale sign is that everything is flawless at 2pm and unwatchable at 8pm, while ordinary speed tests still look great — speed tests are usually exempt from shaping.
Test it: run your stream through a VPN for twenty minutes at peak time. If the stutter vanishes, your ISP is shaping and a VPN (or a different server node) is your permanent fix. If nothing changes, the VPN isn’t the answer and you’ve saved yourself a subscription.
Fix 7 — Ask to be moved to another node
If the first six checks come back clean, it’s our side, and the fix is straightforward: we move your line to a different server node. Any provider running a real network can do this in a couple of minutes. Give them:
- Your username
- The exact channels affected
- The times it happens
- Your device and player app
That’s enough to identify whether it’s a source, a node or a route. A provider who answers “restart your router” to that message, three times running, is telling you they have nothing to look at.
The uncomfortable truth about channel counts
Buffering at peak time is usually a symptom of overselling: too many subscribers per server, sold on the promise of enormous channel numbers. It’s why we’d rather you take a trial and hammer it during a Saturday afternoon of live football than read a specification sheet. Load is the only honest test, and it’s free.
