TiviMate — best for live TV on a TV

Runs on: Android TV, Fire TV, Android boxes. Not available for iOS or Smart TV native apps.

If you mostly watch live channels on a television with a remote, this is the one. The guide layout is closest to a real set-top box, channel switching is quick, and the category management is good enough to tame a huge playlist. The free version covers one playlist; the paid Premium adds recording, multiple playlists, catch-up and a few quality-of-life features for a few pounds a year.

• Strengths: the best EPG on Android TV, fast zapping, excellent category hiding, reliable recording
• Weaknesses: no iOS version, needs sideloading on Firestick, VOD browsing is basic
• Best for: daily live-TV viewers, sports households

IPTV Smarters Pro — best all-rounder

Runs on: Android, Fire TV (Amazon store), iOS, Windows, macOS.

Free, on almost every platform, and in the Amazon app store so there’s no sideloading. Live TV, movies and series each get their own section, which makes it the better choice if you use the VOD library heavily. The guide is functional rather than beautiful, and the interface can feel slow on older hardware with a very large playlist.

• Strengths: everywhere, free, proper VOD browser with posters, easy Xtream Codes login
• Weaknesses: sluggish on old sticks, plainer guide, occasional rough updates
• Best for: most people, especially mixed live + on-demand viewing

OTT Navigator — best for tinkerers

Runs on: Android and Android TV.

The most configurable player of the four by a distance. Custom layouts, per-channel settings, multiple decoders, deep EPG options, archive support. That flexibility is exactly why we don’t recommend it to everyone — there are a lot of settings to get wrong. If you enjoy setting things up exactly the way you want, you’ll prefer it to TiviMate.

• Strengths: unmatched customisation, excellent archive/catch-up handling, efficient with big playlists
• Weaknesses: steep learning curve, Android only, interface density can overwhelm
• Best for: confident users who want exact control

IBO Player / Smart IPTV — best for Smart TVs with no box

Runs on: Samsung Tizen and LG webOS Smart TVs.

If you refuse to add a stick or a box, these are your realistic options on a Smart TV. Setup works differently: you install the app, it shows a MAC address and device key, and your playlist is uploaded to the app’s own portal — which is why we ask for that MAC and do it for you. Most charge a small one-off activation fee to their developer, typically a few euros, unlocked for life.

• Strengths: no extra hardware, simple once activated, low power use
• Weaknesses: small one-off fee, slower interface than a dedicated box, limited features, tied to that TV
• Best for: people who want one remote and nothing plugged in

Three settings to change in whichever you choose

1. Buffer size — raise it to 3–5 seconds. Slightly slower channel changes, far fewer stutters.
2. Decoder — if 4K stutters try Hardware+; if you get audio without video try Software.
3. Hidden categories — hide every country you don’t watch. On a 90,000-channel line this is the difference between a snappy interface and a laggy one.
